Interpreting symbolism

 ……

"Before ………………….. after"

All languages are more than just words or symbols. We have to know the entire culture behind and that is not done under a coffee break. I have learnt three languages as a native and it takes years to understand all hidden understood meanings and the mentality in the language. Like many other deep studies it takes ten years to become a master, but the journey is worth while. This guide to understanding rock-carvings and symbolism. My horizon naturally lies in Scandinavia.

Henrik Holst asked why I have no guide for those who want to learn the language in our rock-carvings. Maybe he would think that I am too deep and complicated with all these files. But the question is big since it is about 4000 years of culture and several 100000 original facts that should be simplified to fractions that encircle the topic.

It would not be possible to write a step by step guide. Here I show you to files from the past 25 years. I am upgrading some of them in the pace I get new information. I think the most important thing is to get an overview what life is about both now and in the past. The chaos theory about fractals taught that we could always find patterns and structures in chaos. I am not using mathematical formulas that describe this topic in the two-dimensional way. We need many parameters to catch all aspects.

The common ground or better common heaven tied together the cultures in ancient times. They painted the World Order in the sky so it was like common brains with ideas tied to yearly ritual and seasonal feasts as preparation for the works. They were all rural cultures from the star and for long the city-states were close to agriculture and the rituals and myths of fertility.

We can not use the frames of today's religion of city-dwellers that are interested in the soul and human relations in the crowded city culture. Then religion becomes ways to educate and indoctrinate people to follow the spiritual lead. That is why I use the term World Order for the past and it was tied to nature and calendar that was the lead when they followed and harvested fertility of the biosphere.

These things are in relation to density of people that creates the spiritual culture. It also means that in the world are cultures in different stages of complication of culture. I would not call it high or low as long as we have no measure of sustainability in sight

Shortly about this guide

There is an essay about Early Script as a reminder that we can follow intellectual culture more than 20000 years back. In chaos we can sort out the structures and patterns of World Order and that means normally ritual astronomy at least until Bronze Age. The quick overview you find in Celestial World Order. In Scandinavia it lived until around 500 AD. So we should know everything about practical astronomy and sooner the main myths connected to the events.

The practical astronomy is manifested in stony monuments and I have an e-book that follows the timeline in that aspect. The myths we get from the big cultures Indus, Egypt and Sumer before 2000 BC. We need to learn about naksatras = mansions of the moon and the squared heavenly vault that later became round carrying the Animal Round. Zodiac and astrology are later inventions in cities.

My worst enemy in this field has always been my preconceived ideas. I have some essays about attitude. It is important that we keep our preconceived ideas under control and meet our ancestors at the same level. This is especially important when we move to rural cultures and sparsely populated parts of the world. We should realise that every environment creates its context. It would be non-scientific valuations if we apply pseudo-qualities on the past and it is against the theory of relativity.

There is a section about Iconography and Lingua Franca since we need a source for "identifying individual signs and images". We need as many known symbols as possible in our mind when we try to understand a certain unknown symbol/ figure. Our ancestors described the unknown by the known. We could go the same way by using a vocabulary of known script and figures. We can follow the seasonal year by the symbols they used to describe the events and the works. In Scandinavia we need much from the big cultures since we have borrowed from them. The big culture borrowed from each other so even there we need the global vocabulary.

The practical work of interpreting is after the documenting. Then we need to place the images right on the timeline, in the context and eventually with links to the sources. Good presentations are usually tied to the "round" with Animal Round as early model or the Ariadne thread that follows a local timeline. The main motif carries the story. The journeys of ancient heroes were disposed in that way. The image "Crocodile" above shows the natural chain of events in the year.
